This product is made out of a vegetable tanned leather.

As a business, we are taking steps toward more sustainable leathers that are ecologically friendly and produced with minimal chemicals. Vegetable tanning is a method of tanning (the process of turning an animal skin or hide into leather) that uses only organic matter. While this method is slower and tedious, it creates a longer lasting leather that becomes more beautiful with use over time. The current industry standard tanning process, called “chrome tanning”, uses harsh chemicals to alter the color of hides. In addition to the use of these chemicals, chrome tanning produces toxic waste that is often dumped into local water sources, negatively affecting the environment and the people nearby.

Only 10% leather produced today is vegetable tanned, which makes sourcing this leather more expensive and harder to find. This explains why there may be a slight price difference in comparison to the same product made in chrome tan leather.
